autoclave usage, safety & recommended supplies

Consolidated Sterilizer Systems Autoclave

what is an autoclave and why are they important in a lab setting?

Sterilization:

  • Autoclaves play a crucial role in sterilization.  They are widely used in R&D laboratory settings including microbiology, medical facilities & tattoo shops, to name a few.  When surgical instruments,  laboratory glassware, or medical waste need to be free from harmful  microorganisms, autoclaves step in.
  • How do they achieve this? By subjecting the items to pressurized saturated steam at a temperature of 121°C (250°F) for a specific duration (usually 30–60 minutes). They sterilize culture media, lab tools such as pipettes and dissection utensils making them ideal for items that can't withstand the higher temperature of a hot air oven.

Biohazard Waste Treatment:

  • A recent application involves pre-disposal treatment and  sterilization of waste material, especially pathogenic hospital waste.  These specialized autoclaves neutralize potentially infectious agents  using pressurized steam and superheated water.
  • In summary, autoclaves are like the conductors of a scientific  symphony—orchestrating sterilization, curing, and material strength with  precision

Operational considerations:

  • Placing specific autoclave tape on items to be sterilized is helpful to ensure that the autoclave reached sterilization temperatures 121°C (250°F). The tape will change color visually demonstrating effective temperatures were reached - however, this does not guarantee your items were fully sterilized.
  • Specialized temperature resistant gloves should be warn when handling items from inside the autoclave.
  • It is best practice to place autoclavable items inside an autoclavable pan or tray prior to placing inside autoclave.
